Chapter 25

It was the end of June before Sara had the chance to go to the Resting Place of the Bear. She carried cleaning rags, a bucket of water, and cleaning supplies she got from the cabin. Now that Sam had the grass and weeds cut, she could clean the headstones and the bear. She had finished the headstones and started on the bear when she heard a voice. When she turned, she slipped, hit the bucket, and fell into the puddle of water.

A startled look covered Peter’s face. He let out a nervous laugh, tried to pull her up, but slipped and landed next to her. “I’m sorry for laughing, but you looked so comical sitting in water.” He laughed again, and held his arm up to shield the remaining water in the bucket from hitting him.

“Now you don’t look any better, Peter. Now what did you want.”

He hooted with laughter. “Your face is covered with mud, Aunt Sara. I just wanted to tell you I’m happy here,” he said and laughed.

Sara ran the rag over his face. “Oh yeah, what’s that on your face?” She knew he was happy, just as Sam was. She knew they’d never leave.

He brushed the mud from his face. “Ugh! What is on that?”

“Cleaner, Peter. Now that we’re both wet, you can continue. What were you going to say?”

“I’m glad Dad decided to stay here. I’m happy here. Back in Rhode Island, it was different. I didn’t have friends, and no girlfriends. They thought I was a nerd because I didn’t drink, just studied a lot.” He made eye contact with her. “I don’t think I’ll ever leave here.” And Sara nodded, and in the meantime, Sam was walking toward the Resting Place. He stopped when he heard Peter talk. He wasn’t aware Peter wasn’t happy before he moved here.

“This place calls you doesn’t it, Peter? The mountains, this great land, the big house, and—the mud on your face calls you.” He laughed.

Peter’s face colored. “Oh, I had good times there, but—”

“It’s okay, Peter, I’m glad to be here too.”

Sara tapped Peter on his knee and said, “I guess that means you’ll be here forever.” She chuckled.

Peter lowered his head a bit. “Dad, I finished the plans for the nursery, I . I was wondering when we can start.”

“Who is going to build this?”

“I’ve got all the bases covered, Dad. I’ve talked to a company that’ll do it and start as soon as you and Aunt Sara give the okay.” He glanced from one to the other because he knew what was coming next.

“And just who is paying for all this?”

“Ah . you, and Aunt Sara, I hope.” Peter had it all mapped out. He was going to have the best garden nursery in the state of New York. He hoped. He watched Sara draw her knees up and hug them. A smile started in the corners of her mouth and spread to her eyes. She nodded, and kept smiling. He knew then he’d get his nursery.
